If asked what my favorite Villa event is, I could not give you one answer; however, Chicks with Sticks would definitely be one of my top choices. Chicks with Sticks is the annual floor-hockey tournament open to any sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The event may appear to be simply for fun, but every team who participates in the tournament has the goal of winning, which makes the event extremely competitive.

DyNASTY reigns supreme

I have been on the same team since sophomore year: DyNASTY (we write it this way so as to be intimidating). My team consists of nine of me and my friends, and I could not imagine being on any other team. As the champions for the previous two years, we knew that we needed to step up our game this year in order to defend the title. Clearly, every person on my team takes Chicks with Sticks very seriously. Since this would be our last year, my team even bought personalized pinnies for the event.

With only one goal against us throughout five games, my team managed to win every game and win the championship, thanks to an overtime goal from Courtney Shaw! We all rushed onto the court, which is one of my favorite memories of senior year. I am so glad that my team stayed together since sophomore year and created a Chicks with Sticks “dynasty.”

Mid-terms: two syllables I dread every year. After Villa’s exceptionally long Christmas break, reality hit me as I returned to school, and I realized that mid-terms were two weeks away.

To me, midterms are worse than finals: when we complete finals, we are done for the summer. After completing midterms, however, we still have two more quarters before summer arrives.

As a senior, my motivation for doing well on midterms is that I remind myself these are my last high school mid-terms. Additionally, many seniors often become exempt from finals (a traditional senior privilege); therefore, mid-terms could even be some seniors’ last exams at Villa.

During midterms week, my stress level escalates. This year has not proved to be any different. After completing my AP Literature and Honors Psychology exams today, I realized I’m one step closer to that much-anticipated moment on Friday at 11am when all my exams will be complete.

After midterms, I can focus on the second semester, including Spirit Week, Chicks with Sticks, lacrosse season, the Father Daughter Dance, Prom, and, of course, Graduation. I would write more, but I just saw my Anatomy and Calc books, and I realized I should probably study!

After four months of hard work, the Villa soccer team won in the state semi-finals and advanced to the state championship in Hershey! As a senior on the team, I can honestly say I’ve waited four years to go to Hershey. If we hadn’t made it to the championship this year, my grade would have been the first class in almost twenty years that would not receive the experience of a Hershey state championship game.

On Thursday, November 17, not only the team but also the entire school was pumped for the game the following day. The pep rally that the school organized played a large part in stirring up the energy throughout Villa. While watching the video clips and photos from throughout the season, I was about to cry because I realized how close our team was both on and off the field. I knew that regardless of the outcome of the championship game, this past season was the best sports season I’ve ever experienced at Villa.

Later on Thursday, both Varsity and JV left for Hershey. I cannot even describe the excitement each player felt while on the bus to Hershey. We had all heard from past Villa players that the game at Hershey was truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and knowing that we would soon be experiencing that same feeling made the bus ride seem almost surreal. From the moment we arrived in Hershey, our team connected on a completely new level.

On Friday, we took over an hour just to prepare for the game. We made sure that our glitter and blue eyeshadow were bright enough, that our yellow ribbons were tied tight, and that each player was focused solely on the game. Around 3:30, we left the hotel and drove to Hershey Stadium. Unlike any other stadium in which we had played, Hershey Stadium was huge and absolutely gorgeous. From the time we pulled into the parking lot to the time we stepped on the field, a mixture of excitement and apprehension encompassed each player.

Villa fans are a force to be reckoned with

With about one minute before the start of the game, the Villa fans arrived. A swarm of at least 200 Villa students and teachers, dressed completely in blue and gold, filled the stadium. The school spirit was unbelievable, and all the players felt less nervous knowing that they had the school’s support (and our opponents’ even looked intimidated by it). Although we lost the game 1-0, we ended our season with a successful record of 23-1.

This past soccer season, especially our Hershey trip, was one of my favorite experiences throughout my four years at Villa, and the memories from it mean so much more to me than would a championship trophy. I want to thank every fan for constantly motivating us, and I want to especially thank my Villa soccer family for an unforgettable season!
